But not to worry, there are many ways that you, the publisher, can increase your sites AdSense CPC and RPM, resulting in more AdSense revenue.

Increase AdSense Revenue

Common AdSense Questions

What does AdSense Page RPM mean?

RPM means ‘Revenue Per Mille’, or essentially how much you make per thousands page views. So, AdSense page RPM means that per 1000 page views, that is how much you make. A good Page RPM is around $5 to $10, with AdSense. You can always increase your Page RPM by following the rest of our tips.

What does AdSense CTR mean?

CTR is short for ‘Click-Through Rate’, this is the percentage of clicks you gained from the impressions show. So say you served 100 impressions, and from that you gained 5 clicks, your CTR (Click-Through Rate) would be 5%. As 5% of ads shown were clicked.

What does AdSense CPC mean?

CPC is a short way of saying ‘Cost Per Click’, this is similar to PPC (Pay Per Click). For each click on one of the ads on your site, you will be paid. A normal CPC is between $0.10 and $1 but can be a lot higher for niches such as Insurance or a niche about a Mortgage or Loans. These are all high paying niches so have a much higher CPC.

What does AdSense CPM and eCPM mean?

CPM is short for ‘Cost Per Mille’, similar to RPM, this is the amount you earn for each 1000 impressions on ads on your site, with eCPM being very similar. eCPM is the estimated CPM for 1000 impressions, this takes into account clicks, CPA deals, and more. These are a great way of measuring your site’s ad performance, as you can see one figure that describes and summarises your revenue.

Ways to Increase AdSense revenue

Now that they are all cleared up, lets get into the tips on how to increase Google AdSense revenue in 2023.

• Increase your AdSense CPC

But you are most likely wondering, how can I increase my AdSense CPC? Well there are 3 main ways that you can increase your AdSense earnings per click:

1) Use Competitive Ad Sizes

Ad Sizes like the 300x250 medium rectangle, 300x600 half-page ad (usually found and used in the site sidebar), and by far the highest paying AdSense ad size is 970x250 large skyscraper. These are all extremely competitive ad sizes, with a lot of advertisers bidding to earn a spot in one of these ad sizes. This means that your CPC will be much higher when using these ad sizes in Google AdSense. Do remember that using fixed ad sizes can make a poor experience on mobile and tablet devices, so maybe look into using some kind of CSS to manage the sizes of them.

2) Place Ads At The Top

To increase your AdSense CPC place a big ad at the top of the page. This is one of the ways many increase their AdSense revenue. It may seem a bit unusual, but AdSense fills the ads in the order of how much they pay on the page. So, ad with the highest CPC is always at the top. So, if that ad has a high CTR, then you will gain more revenue. One way to increase this CTR is to make it large and obvious.

3) Use Fewer Ads

One way to get a high CPC is to not use too many ads on the same page. Not only does this increase user experience, load times, CTR, and more but it also increases your CPC. This is definitely one to experiment with and you should always A/B test your ads before committing to the changes on your site.

• Include higher-paying AdSense Keywords

There’s a load of high paying keywords that you can include in your post. AdSense is a contextual ad network, so if you include and reference keywords that have a high CPC, then you will see higher paying ads that are more relevant to those keywords. However, it is a very bad idea to just spam those keywords throughout your post, but it is actually best practice just to spread some around in your post, as long as they are relevant to the actual article topic. The highest paying AdSense keywords are:

Keyword CPC
Loans $61.23
Insurance $56.89
Mortgage $55.36
Credit Card $43.35
Attorney $41.27
Degree $28.49
University $28.39
Cloud Hosting $27.65
Trading $25.37
Bitcoin $23.56

These will surely boost your Google AdSense CPC quickly in 2023, without harming the user experience by spamming he words. Do remember, these words should be used in relevant posts and places.

• Use In-Article Ads

The main reason you should use AdSense in-article ads to increase your AdSense earnings is because they are very likely to show video ads. If you are not familiar with being a publisher or familiar with Google AdSense, video ads are the highest paying ad format in most cases, with having CPMs of up to $15, depending on your niche or the seasonality. It is not very common for you to serve video in in-feed ads or in regular AdSense display ads, but with in-article ads you should see a lot of video ads relevant to your posts content.

These will add a boost to your CPM and RPM, even if you are not getting any clicks on these video ads, meaning they will always generate revenue, despite your number of clicks.

In-Article Ads AdSense

• Use in-feed ads in your homepages

We all know the benefits of using native ads; better user-experience, more clicks, higher paying ads… the list goes on. But a lot of publishers using AdSense do not take advantage of in-feed ads on their site. You can easily create and style the in-feed ads to your sites design so that they look very native and just like your site. They tend to have a higher CTR and also tend to have a higher CPC, so you should always be using these around navigation areas and feeds on your site.

You can use them on your homepages between your posts and in your feeds, and also use them at the bottom of your posts, as if it were a sponsored card or Taboola type ad. These will get quite a few clicks and can lead to quite a large amount of revenue for your site. Make sure that you match them up to look and fit in with your site design or else they will just be ignored by visitor.

In-Feed Ads AdSense

• Improve your bounce rate

This one is actually much easier than it sounds. In my personal experience, one sure fire way to lower your bounce rate and gain more page views is to add some kind of footer containing your other posts. This can increase AdSense revenue because if your user is visiting multiple pages, they are seeing more ads, if they are seeing more ads you will get more clicks on your AdSense ads.

This is the one way that can be controlled by you on how to increase your AdSense earnings. This will also improve your revenue if you are using a CPM ad network as your impressions are increasing, so your revenue is as well.

• Block low paying advertisers

This is another common way of increasing AdSense CPC. A lot of advertisers pay very little per click, a way to stop these advertisers showing is to stop them. There is a list that you should enter into your AdSense blocking page. These low paying AdSense advertisers can be found around the internet.

You can also block low paying categories. If you are aware that your site is not about a certain topic, then you most likely realise that you will not get clicks on those ads. So, you can block those topics so that related ads to that topic do not show on your site, instead related ads that are relevant to your site niche will show. So say your site was about auto insurance, if you were to write a post about auto insurance quotes, the ads could be about lawyers and attorneys. But, if you block those categories then your ads will be focused on auto insurance and auto insurance quotes, rather than lawyers. These can sometimes harm your revenue however, so make sure you are testing your AdSense ads frequently.

• Use AdSense Auto Ads

This is a very good way to increase your AdSense revenue because AdSense auto ads use AI and heatmaps to detect where ads would be best on your pages. AdSense auto ads then place those ads in the best places possible where it thinks it will gain as many clicks as possible, therefore increasing your AdSense revenue. Auto ads will also place ads that are responsive, so they look great and fit with your site on both mobile and desktop devices.

Another great way auto ads will increase AdSense earnings is that it also has the options for vignette and anchor ads. Vignette ads are just interstitial ads that your user will see the firs time they view another page on your site, so if they navigated to another post of yours for the first time in that day, they’ll see an interstitial ad. These can be high paying, but they do really damage user experience, so use them carefully, and remember they can increase bounce rate on your site.

AdSense auto ads will also allow you to use matched content. These are the native ads that you see at the bottom of some posts where they contain links and previews to other posts on your site as well as ads mixed in with that content. These can lead to a lot of clicks because of how the ads fit in with the content. However, you do require at least 1000 pages to be allowed to use these matched content ads, so it will be unavailable for a lot of sites.

Auto Ads AdSense

• Run experiments and A/B tests

This can be a very easy way that you can earn more on AdSense because there is a built in experiment feature that allows you to A/B test ads. You can change things with auto ads and then rather than making them live to 100% of users, you can set it to around 50% of users and then see if it increases or harms your AdSense earnings.

These can help you find ways to increase your AdSense revenue in 2023, without hurting your revenue in the meantime. A/B tests ensure that you do not show your new ads to 100% of the users, making sure that you sure always generating at least some revenue while testing your new ads.

AdSense A/B Testing

• Use red in your ads

This one may seem unusual but if you are using red for links and titles in your ads then they stand out more against your content, but not in a bad way. Users will be more likely to notice them because it looks like content, but content that is important. This can lead to them reading and viewing the ad, and hopefully clicking it.

The best red colour to use for titles and links (for in-article and in-feed ads) is #cc0000. This is red with a hint of black in it, it makes it look much more modern and not the whole 2000s website look. This can also add colour to your page and make it seem lighter and more appealing. Use this colour for the advertiser link and the “Visit” button on in-feed ads and for the title of in-article ads. Hopefully, you should see some better results with these.

AdSense A/B Testing

• Place ads following the AdSense Heatmap

AdSense is mainly reliant on where you place your ads, this will obviously increase your clicks because if they are in places where users are likely to click or view, they you will earn more with AdSense. AdSense has a heatmap that has been dubbed the “AdSense Heatmap”, which you can see below. Place your ads in the darkest places on this map. You can see that the best places to place your ads:

AdSense Heatmap

Place your ads just above you post title or just below the title, this is a very high CTR lace because it does not disrupt your user experience, instead it introduces your content. Another great place is to put ads in your site sidebar. It is always best to make this sidebar sticky as well, so that as the user scrolls it will still see the ad, this will nearly always increase your ad CTR.

• Avoid placing ads near images

This is definitely a common mistake with most AdSense publishers. Placing your ads near or below images can draw the user’s attention from the ad to the image. Also, a lot of users tend to just skip past images to the main content, so therefore, they skip past the ad. This may not seem so obvious, but I started avoiding placing ads near images and it turned out to be once of the best ways to increase AdSense revenue.

I hope these tips helped increase your AdSense revenue and if you do not have AdSense approval yet, you can read our guide on how to get accepted by AdSense in 2023. Be sure to use these tips!
